Years ago, Air Force veteran Nicole* signed up to receive the VFW monthly e-newsletters. She hoped to learn about resources to share with other veterans.
“I didn’t think that I would come to need the resources myself,” she said.
But when the pandemic hit, Nicole applied for the VFW’s Unmet Needs program she had learned about online.
“The process was not challenging at all because the VFW representatives walked me through the steps while providing clarification,” she explained.
The aid helped pay insurance bills and provide household necessities. But for Nicole, it offered more.
“The support meant that someone sees us,” she said. “It serves as a reminder that the oath that I took to serve this beautiful country was not in vain.”
Nicole appreciates those who made the assistance possible and encourages them to continue their good work. And she hopes individuals who are considering donating to the VFW feel confident that they are giving to a worthy cause.
“There are many nonprofits that people can give to, but the VFW is an organization where donations make a meaningful difference for households,” she said. “The VFW takes pride in its work, is transparent and displays accountability.”
Nicole knew she had somewhere to turn in the face of unforeseen challenges.
“The VFW offered me resources that I didn’t know existed for service members, giving my family another option during the pandemic,” she explained. “There are programs and plans to help families in crisis, but realistically, taking out another loan was not the best solution for my household. The VFW supplied real relief.”
