While serving with the Air National Guard based out of the 133rd Airlift Wing in St. Paul, Minnesota, since 2019, Abbey Berg has remained dually committed to her educational pursuits.
Approaching her third year of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Bethel University in St. Paul this fall, Berg began applying for scholarships when her husband, an Air Force veteran, told her about VFW’s "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship.”
“He opened my eyes to it,” said Berg, who deployed to Al Udeid Air Force Base in Doha, Qatar, with the 8EAMS Squadron in 2021. “He had previously applied to this scholarship for financial support in his degree.”
Berg applied in the spring and was quickly approved for $5,000 this fall. With two years left in her program at Bethel, Berg hopes to parlay her financial support into a post-graduate degree.
“I plan to pursue a Master's in Nurse-Midwifery at Bethel, a 10-month program,” Berg said. “After that, I would like to get a job as a nurse-midwife.”
Berg is among the many veterans in pursuit of higher learning who turn to VFW’s “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship” for a hand up. The scholarship, founded in 2013, provides service members and veterans with the financial assistance they need to complete their educational goals without incurring excessive student loan debt.
Since its inception, the VFW’s “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship” has awarded $12.3 million to more than 2,700 veterans and service members wanting to further their education.
