As part of its 10th anniversary of the VFW's "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" program, Sport Clips is aiming to raise $1.7 million by Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The amount will mean that the program will reach a milestone of $13 million in a decade.
As VFW’s official haircutter, Sport Clips has already raised $12.3 million for veterans and military members seeking higher education. The VFW’s "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" program gives up to $5,000 to student veterans to help cover tuition and fees each semester. To date, students have received more than 2,720 scholarships since the start of the program.
Air Force veteran, VFW Life member and founder and chairman of Sport Clips Gordan Logan said that over the past decade, he has seen firsthand how impactful the scholarship program has been for student veterans.
“For so many, it was the difference between staying in school and completing their degree or abandoning their educational dreams,” Logan said. “I look forward to the impact this program will continue to have on our nation’s heroes.”
VFW Commander-in-Chief Duane Sarmiento said that while it is difficult for military service members to transition into civilian life, the Sport Clips Help A Hero program may help “eliminate some of the stress” that comes with going to school.
“The costs of higher education continue to soar, so ensuring that our nation’s service members and veterans have the aid and support they need to be successful after their military career is over continues to be a top priority for the VFW,” Sarmiento said.
