When the COVID-19 crisis first caused schools to close their doors, families who relied on kids eating meals at school were put in a difficult position.
Many schools had a gap between when they closed and when they could start getting food distributed to kids in need. VFW Post 8452 in Gainesville, Georgia, helped make sure no child went hungry.
The Post provided their building and other resources to serve as a drop-off point and drive-through distribution center. They hosted an event in March that brought together a number of community partners. Families could drive by and pick up meals, bottled water, children’s books and other goods donated by area businesses for the local residents.
“It is always an honor to stand with our community's local businesses and first responders to provide help to those in need,” said Post Commander Charles Brown.
After the one-day event, volunteers spent the remainder of the week meeting at Post 8452 to organize meals and deliver them to schools.
“When a request to help our community comes to the VFW, the call is heard and our members step up to answer,” Brown said. “It was a great and rewarding week.”
