Two-time Iraq War veteran David Fields was training for a third deployment to the region when he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. The incident left him disabled but not defeated.
“I served for 25 and a half years. I thought it’d be 27,” he said, “but I had to figure out a different way to serve.”
Fields, who lives in Grand Cane, Louisiana, is a member of VFW Post 7287 and is also the VFW Louisiana state chaplain. He explained that he is #StillServing in these roles because he wants to be an example of how to turn a challenge into an opportunity.
“Life often throws us curveballs,” he said, “but I knew God had more in store for me.”
As growing numbers of veterans struggle with their mental health, those like Fields, who are #StillServing after tragedy strikes, are inspiring men and women across the country to move forward too.
